TRAVEL AND ACCOMMODATION

TRAVEL

Participants travelling from overseas will fly into Brisbane, Sydney or Cairns International Airports and connect with a domestic flight to Townsville. Qantas, Virgin Blue and Jetstar operate services to Townsville. Direct flights from Brisbane to Townsville will take approximately 1 hour 50 minutes, from Sydney to Townsville 2 hours 30 minutes, and from Cairns to Townsville approximately 55 minutes.

On arrival at the Townsville airport (which is a regional airport and, therefore, not very complicated), make your way outside to the taxi rank or the airport bus. The distance from Townsville airport to the Ferry Terminal is 7kms. Travel time by car is approximately 10 minutes.

Participants who prefer to travel by train from Brisbane are urged to book early on Queensland Rail’s Tilt Train or the Sunlander. Express bus services are available through Greyhound Australia and Premier.

If you prefer to rent a car during your stay in Townsville, all major Car Rental companies operate in Townsville, including Avis, Budget, Europcar, Hertz and Thrifty.

COST OF FERRY: Townsville to Magnetic Island and return -- $29.00 ($14.50 concession). Click here for ferry timetable.

ACCOMMODATION

1. Magnetic Island Sport and Recreation Centre

This is the accommodation option that we hope all or most participants will choose because, as the venue for the weekend’s input and discussion, it will allow for a more complete experience.

However, participants need to be aware that it is backpacker-style accommodation and, as such, lodgings and food are quite basic: Cabins; 5 or 6 women to a cabin; double-decker bunks; ablution block a very short distance from the cabins. [The grounds are well lit at night and security has never been a problem in all the years that Townsville’s feminists have used the venue for weekend workshops.]

One of the benefits of this kind of accommodation is that the cost is very low. Another benefit is that we can all feel like we’re away at school camp again!! A third, and the most important, benefit is that we will spend 24 hours a day with strong, like-minded feminists.

As a Recreation Camp owned by the Queensland Government, it has many recreation and sporting facilities (tennis courts, etc.), all of which will be available to us - if time allows. Also, it is situated in very pleasant surrounds, which lends itself to sitting around on the grass chatting with friends, going for walks in the balmy Spring weather, or finding a spot where you can be by yourself to read or meditate.

2. Hotels on Magnetic Island

For those who prefer accommodation that is a little less basic, there are other options on Magnetic Island. The Recreation Centre, where the Mary Daly event will be held, is in PICNIC BAY so it would be best to look for accommodation there.
